Office people laughing. Children laugh 300 times a day while adults only laugh 16 times a day.

What is Laughter Yoga?

Laughter Yoga is a fun combination of stretching, breathing and laughter exercises.  A Laughter Yoga session can have a profound effect on your overall health and well-being.

Laughter Yoga was created in1995 by Dr. Madan Katari, a western trained family physician in Mumbai, India. As he was writing an article, Laughter is the Best Medicine for his monthly newsletter, he was astounded by the amount of research showing the numerous health benefits of laughter. He started the first Laughter Club in the park across from his home. This innovative concept is quickly sweeping the world – there are already thousands of laughter clubs across the globe. In addition, Laughter Yoga is also practiced in companies and corporations, fitness centers, yoga studios, senior facilities, schools, colleges and universities.

Deb will come to your business, church group, social organization or support group and lead a 30- or 60- minute interactive presentation.

The 60 minute presentation includes a PowerPoint presentation that defines and describes the origin of Laughter Yoga and explores the scientific and historical perspectives of laughter. The presentation identifies and discusses the numerous health, workplace and personal benefits of laughter. In the second half of the session, Deb provides participants the opportunity to try Laughter Yoga and see for themselves how amazing laughter can be and how easy it is to integrate into their life and work.

The 30 minute presentation includes a brief verbal explanation of the origin of Laughter Yoga and highlights the numerous benefits of Laughter Yoga. Deb also leads participants in a Laughter Yoga session that awakens the child-like playfulness in everyone.  No mat required!

Benefits of Laughter Yoga:

Reduces stress
Boosts immune system
Manages pain
Burns calories
Enhances mood
Facilitates sleep
Improves self-confidence

Employers often find that disgruntled employees or conflicting coworkers change before their eyes as Laughter Yoga awakens the creative playfulness within everyone. You don’t have to be in a good mood, and you don’t have to have a sense of humor to laugh.  You will find that laughter is contagious.

Laughter Yoga in the Workplace

Due to the recent downturn in the economy, work has become a stressful, serious environment for many. Natural, spontaneous laughter in daily life usually comes for just a few seconds here and there. That’s not enough to bring about the powerful physiological changes you get from extended and hearty laughter that comes from your belly/diaphragm.

Scientific research shows that laughter can help resolve workplace stress and many related issues, but until now there hasn’t been a reliable and effective system to deliver laughter. Humor was the only tool available, but it isn’t reliable and it seldom leads to continuous hearty laughter.

Laughter Yoga is a breakthrough laughter delivery system that enables a person to laugh continuously for 15 to 20 minutes with short breaks of yogic breathing.

“Employers who actively sustain a positive work environment could experience improvements of up to 25 percent in efficiency and customer satisfaction.”

— Journal of Applied Psychology – 2003
